Guide
When the power goes out
What to do in the first hour, how long food lasts, and running a generator safely.
In the first hour
- Check whether it's just you: look at neighbours, then your utility's outage map, and report it.
- Unplug sensitive electronics, and leave one light on so you know when power is back.
- Use flashlights, not candles.
Food
- Keep the fridge and freezer closed. A closed fridge keeps food cold for about 4 hours; a full freezer about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24.
- Throw out perishable food that has been above 40°F for 2 hours or more.
Generators and heat
- Run generators outside only, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents. Never in a garage, even with the door open.
- Never heat your home with a gas stove or oven.
- Have a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm.
People
- Check on neighbours who are older, ill or alone.
- If someone relies on powered medical equipment, have a plan to reach power before you need it.
